Subject: [*] (Re)Sumbission of TCXdiff 1.0b1 [This is now a .sit file]
TCXdiff 1.0b1
=============
[ TCXdiff requires System 7.x. ]
[ TCXdiff is ) Tat C. Wan, 1993. ]
[ Portions ) Symantec. Xdiff code modified from NCSA's sources. ]
[ This program is freeware. ]
>From the Readme file:
TCXdiff is a text file comparison utility which generates a difference (diff)
file for a given source file. The diff file can be used to update an older
version of the source file stored on another computer (normally, a Unix
machine). By transferring the much shorter diff file instead of the entire
source file, significant upload time can be saved. This is especially useful
for people who connect to Unix hosts using slow dial-up modems. Although the
primary focus of TCXdiff is for programmers who need to synchronize their
program files between their personal computer and a Unix host, it can be used
to update any other text file as well.
TCXdiff is based on the freeware program Xdiff written in August 1989 at the
National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). You can obtain Xdiff
via anonymous ftp from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu. The Xdiff package is needed in
addition to TCXdiff since TCXdiff DOES NOT perform the updating per se, but
relies on xfix (part of the Xdiff package) to perform that task. Xfix was
written primarily for Unix hosts, I have not tried to compile it on other
platforms.
TCXdiff is functionally equivalent to Xdiff. However, it adds the ability to
specify default folders and filenames (useful for batch processing), as well
as drag-and-drop file processing capabilities.

Here is Astrocalc 0.b1, a Hypercard stack.
This is a small piece of a much larger project, and in
spite of its name, this portion is for doing date /
time calculations. Date conversions include Roman,
Egyptian, Julian Day, Olympiad. Time conversions
include Greenwich, local standard, sidereal.
I'm submitting this because there was chat on this

of converting date-time to a decimal number. No
documentation, and although I've tried to implement
some decent error-checking, you're basically on your

Abstract.
--------
At-Your-Service 1.0 is a HyperCard communications package that -
provides a toolkit for installing self contained communications
capabilities into new or existing stacks. The installed facilities provide
a fast, simple and secure way of launching multiple, simultaneous
communication sessions.
is based upon Apple's Communications Toolbox technology, consequently
connectivity is only limited by the range of Connection and Terminal
Emulation tools that are available on your machine.
(N.B. The package comes bundled with a public domain TCP/IP/telnet tool
and Apple's VT102 terminal emulation tool).
includes 'communications' extensions to HyperCard's scripting language
(HyperTalk) to provide a powerful communications scripting facility.
The package is designed around the concept of a 'service', which is
defined as any process running on a local or remote computer, eg. an
Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) or a Campus Wide Information System
(CWIS). A service is uniquely defined via a series of 15 parameters that
describe attributes such as the name, service type, the method used to
connect to the service, the login and logout scripts, etc.
The hub of the package is the AYS Installer stack that is responsible for
maintaining service definitions by providing facilities for creation,
storage and testing. As the name implies the stack is also responsible
for installing/removing definitions into/from other stacks, therefore
enabling the creation of custom built communication stacks or the addition
of communications facilities to existing stacks.
Installed service definitions allow for multiple, simultaneous sessions to
be active at any one time. A typical session might therefore include a
serial connection to your local OPAC in one window, whilst another window
displays information from a CWIS, and a third displays a remote network
connection to a second OPAC.
The second stack included with the package, the AYS Example stack is a
stand-alone communications 'application' that is intended both as an
example of what can be achieved as well as a useful, ready-to-use utility.

Subject: [*] DART 1.5.3
Summary
DART (Disk Archive/Retrieval Tool) is an application that enables you to
duplicate Macintosh, Lisa, Apple II, or MS-DOS disks, save disk images,
and create disks from image files. DART 1.5 can read disk image files
in DART, DiskMaker, or Disk Copy format. DART 1.5 image files are
compressed, approaching a reduction in size comparable to that obtained
by using a commercial compression utility. DART 1.5 is System 7.0 "savvy",
and implements a custom Apple event mechanism to automate the conversion of
older DART or Disk Copy files to 1.5 format. The conversion process can be
run by "remote control" (even across a network!) using the accompanying
HyperCard stack. (For more information, please refer to the DART User Manual.)
................................................................................
Features
o Data compression: more disk images can be archived in the same amount of
space.
o Data checksumming for reliable disk duplication.
o Can read Disk Copy image files.
o Requires only 224K of RAM to run.
o Stack utility enables you to batch-convert DART 1.4 or Disk Copy files.
o Apple events support ("required" AE suite and custom 'cnvt' event.)
o System 7 "drag-and-drop" disk image creation.
o 32-bit clean.
o A/UX compatible.
o Nifty color icons and balloon help.
................................................................................
What's New in version 1.5.3
o Compatibility with new Macintosh Quadra 840av and Centris 660av machines.
o Compatibility with Apple Event Manager 1.0.1 (a component of AppleScript).

time (ex: Mac and Dos into Unix).
Packed with StuffIt; docs included; source code available (just ask).
Stuff new with this version (1.2):
* doesn't wreck with buss error in dialogs any more.
* can change file/creator type of file(s) processed.
* can remove trailing spaces/tabs from lines.
Stuff new with version 1.1:
* strips bit 7 from text files.
* can handle more than 40 files at a time.
* works better with b&w systems.
* less occurance of "buss error" on startup.
* progress dialog doesn't whip in and out.
* faster overall.

Subject: [*] MacDOS 1.0
MacDOS 1.0 provides DOS-like command line and batch capabilities to
control the Mac OS. It lets you display, list, copy, rename, change
attributes of, delete, and print files both interactively and via a
script. You can select files through wildcarded filenames, creator,
type, and more. MacDOS also lets you create and remove folders, set
system date and time, and launch applications.
For example, with MacDOS you can print a series of text files without
having to respond to any dialog at all, or change the creator of all
files of a certain type whose names contain a particular sequence
of characters.
Be aware that MacDOS has a protection mechanism that lets you use
its full functionality only if you register and pay for it.

have trouble ejecting the CDs, with a prompt indicating that "CD could not
be ejected, since it is being shared." However, no user on the network had
accessed the CDs (or even the machines to which they were connected); we
have
to shut off File Sharing in order to be able to eject the CDs.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is this a glitch in
AppleShare?? Or do we have some other conflict? (we've seen the same
problem with each CD-ROM drive, despite their different manufacturers)
Thanx!

I wondered the same thing recently and called HP Tech Support.
Version 4.0, it turns out, is the same as 3.9, but is designed for
European users. North Americans should NOT use 4.0, as they will have
trouble with paper sizes and perhaps other unknown difficulties.
For all pratical purposes, in North America, 3.9 is the latest.

Sigh..... Apple apparently hasn't learned a thing from its irate customers
world-wide who purchased IIvx's and IIvi's, only to have them dropped from
Apple's product lineup after only a few months.
After an even more brief time (a couple of months) on the price list, during
which time it was almost impossible to buy one because the demand was so huge,
Apple Canada has dropped the LC520 from its product line. (If it hasn't yet
happened in the USA, it probably will soon.) Sure, the new models coming out
in
October will be marginally faster and marginally less expensive, but Apple
doesn't seem to care at all how the Edsel-buyers feel about it! I really
wonder
how many of them will line up to be repeat customers a few years from now.

I don't use shareware for network troubleshooting but I do have lots of
opinions :-)
Currently Connected Users:
I like CheckNet DA by Farallon. It is fast. If it's on someone else's
machine then I use Interpoll by Apple. If I wanted to know when people
appear and disappear from the network as it occurs, I'd use NetWatchMan
>From AG Group.
Collisions, retransmits, lost packets:
I tend to use a packet sniffer for this kind of info. Lately I've been
using Neon Software's products but I alternate between Neon and AG Group.
Both are good.
If I suspect network cable or hardware problems then I use MacPing by the
good folks at Darmouth College. It send echo packets in a round robin style
to everyone you specify. Over a period of time you see which pathways tend
to eat packets and which are squeaky clean.
Total throughput speed between and two computers:
Why? The most common reason for slow throughput is slow computers or
going through a router. If you have a slow computer (hard drive,
application, etc.) there is nothing on the network you can do to speed it
up. If you are going through a router, it is going to be slow. The only way
to speed that up is by putting them on the other side of the router. Of
course if you do that then packets going to nodes on the network they used
to be on will become slow.
To measure throughput, I created a HyperCard stack that transfers a file
and times it in seconds. It does it several times to get an average and you
must run it from one machine transferring to the other.
To figure out which side of the router a machine should be on, I
recommend TrafficWatch that is now a product of Neon Software.
The biggest problems I see most often are router misconfigurations. The
only product for solving router misconfigurations is RouterCheck by Neon
Software. If you have a handfull of routers, you should have RouterCheck.
When I want to quickly see how network wires are connected together, I use
International Transware's Manager software. If graphically allows you to
crawl around the wires and see what is connected to what. It is the only
free software I use.
I have other tools for specific situations but I'd say that 98% of the
problems that are AppleTalk network related I can solve with these.

Subject: AXE terminal
Does anyone out there know if there exists a Macintosh program to use
as a terminal program for AXE. AXE is the telephone exchange
manufactured and sold by Ericsson/Sweden. The terminal program that is
used today is FIOL, but it only works on DOS-machines. I am a
teacher/instructor at Telia Training Division in Kalmar Sweden and my
job is to train our students in AXE operation and maintenance. Here at
the school we use Macintosh for all documentation, communication,
administration and so on. So I would really like my Mac to function as
an AXE-terminal as well. I know I can use ANY terminal program, but if
there exists a special AXE-terminal program I would rather use that.
Why?
Communicating with AXE means sending a lot of text commands using MML
(Man Machine Language). For every command sent there is an answer
printout from AXE. I want to be able to prepare a text file containing
several AXE-commands and use my terminal to send these commands to the
connected AXE. But the terminal program must wait for the answer for
every command before it sends the next one.
I have not seen any Mac-program that can do this. Any useful
information will be appreciated. Please answer by email to:

Version 4.7.2 of Brown University's Term program is available now.
Term emulates a Televideo 950 terminal, and includes many standard

features to support 3270 emulation through protocol converters, or
using tn3270 through a terminal server or similar connection. Term
shares some code with Brown's Macintosh tn3270, and provides a similar
interface to users dialing in through a modem. The VM/CMS RMAC and WMAC
file transfer commands work with Term as well as tn3270.
Version 4.7.2 includes several bug fixes, and provides a "reduced

Sorry for the delay, but here are the answers I received to my original query

The answers I received were very uniform. Here is a quote from Mike Cohen

I called Symantec. They assured me that the information given above is
correct. Furthermore, they advised that C++ V6.0 supports templates and is
AT&T V3.0 compliant (I take it to be cfront V3.0 compliant, though the name
"cfront" seemed to confuse the Symantec support technician). So, Symantec
appears to be the only option (a sad state of affairs when compared with the
proliferation of DOS/Windows software). The cost at MacConnection was $339 as
far as I remember.
As for X windows, are MacX and eXodus X servers? If so, it appears to me that
they would work fine to simulate an X-terminal but would be inappropriate for
development, as no X libraries or include files would be provided.
George White suggested the following:
> Why not run unix on your Mac? There was a recent announcement of a free

I was hoping to find something under MacOS, as I did not want to bother
switching computers or operating systems... It appears there is no X
development environment for MacOS. Or did anyone port X-windows/Motif to Mac?

Subject: Caution for MacCheck users
Well, caution it too strong, but if you have added strange things
to your mac (like an accelerator), MacCheck might give you false
error messages.
MacCheck is a very nice system/hard disk trouble shooter included in the
Disk Utility package available from ftp.apple.com. The path name is
something like dts/mac/sys.soft/utilities/utilities-disk-800k.hqx
(this is from memory, so I'm sure that last bit is off).
For example, if you have a Mobius accelerator, MacCheck tells you you
have a ROM error. (I have confirmed this with 2 other Mobius users)
If you disable the accelerator, the ROM checks out fine. So, just don't
jump to any drastic conclusions if MacCheck warns you of a hardware
problem and you are using a non-standard Mac.

First of all, thanks to those who took the time to answer my font
question. In particular:
Allan Hunter
Matt Neuburg
Will McCauley
James Lawry
My appologies for not sending a direct thank you and to anyone I may have
missed in the above list.
For those of you who tuned in late...
The problem was, even though I had installed a fairly complete selection
of Geneva font sizes in a font suitcase that was opened by Carpetbag,
my applications seemed to be unable to find any except 9 & 12 pt.
The solution was to move all Geneva (and Monaco) fonts into the System
file (BTW, I'm running Sys. 7.0.1-tuned). Apparently, the system has these
fonts installed (even though you may not be able to see them when you open
the system file). When an application looks for a font, it seems to stop in
the first place it finds the _name_ of the font. If the correct size is not
installed in this location, it does not look further. Instead, it builds the
size it needs. Hence, when I specified Geneva 10, the application found the
System's Geneva fonts and never saw the fonts that Carpetbag was holding.
I knew that Chicago fonts should be left in the system file, but did not
know about the Geneva and Monaco fonts. Anyway, the story has a happy
ending and I can get on with the rest of my life ;-)
Thanks again to all.

Now that there's a good selection, I'm thinking of getting a dock for my
Duo. The one I'm most interested in is the new Ether Dock from
EMachines. I understand that Apple is also comming out with a dock with
similar network capability. Dose anyone out there have any nformation
or experience with this or any other "portable" dock for the Duo?

You do not need a utility to disable AfterDark if you use the sleep/No-Sleep
cor
ners option.

Subject: Quadra 840AV Video Capture Capabilities
I've been away for a while, so have not been reading the postings, but
have been trying to determine the video capture capabilities of the 840AV.
Specifically, the primary requirement is to capture full PAL frames for
enhancement in Photoshop for publication, and as these are from videos of
lab experiments, it would be nice to capture a sequence of frames in
order to pick the best one for our purpose.
Secondly I would like to be able to make short Quicktime movie clips for
illustrating experimental features on screen.
Prior to the release of the AV Quadras we were about to purchase either a
Radius VideoVision or a RasterOps 24MxTV board, so I guess my question is
how does the capture capability of the 840AV compare to these boards? I
would presume the 840AV would not have any problem with the Quicktime
movies, but at what rate can it capture full PAL frames to memory and/or
to disk, and does it capture full frames, or only fields and interpolate
the interlace lines as a number of capture boards do?.
I would be grateful if anyone can answer this, as the 840AV would seem to
be a better way to go if it can do the job.

Subject: Speech Apps (Q)
Has anybody written an application with the new PlainTalk/
Macintalk-Pro/whatever software such that the speech output
can be saved into a Mac sound file? Or is this impossible?
I would like to be able to type messages to be spoken with
the synthesized voices and played-back later (including on
my Sun at the office, after conversion to .au files).
Apps like Speecher can do the text-to-speech translation
just fine, but don't seem to have any way to capture the
sound output; the Sun Ulaw converter works great but has
to have a sound file to start with.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is another case of You Can't
Get There From Here [at least for now].
Comments, anyone?

about a month & I have to FTP the digests from sumex.]

Agreed, I think it's offensive, but I don't think censorship is an answer.
After all, different people have different views on all subjects and no
one has to read anything they are bothered by. Of course, it strikes me
that one of the alt.binaries.pictures lists would be more appropriate than
sumex, but who am I to say(?) Having expressed an unpopular view (on
copyright) on comp.sys.mac.digest I get uneasy at the thought of excluding
something because it offends one or another individual or group.

Subject: Word 4.0e
A few people have written in recently regarding Word 4.0e. Here are a few
more details:
Word 4.0e is for the 68040 Macs and it is a free update from 4.0x
If you have a Centris, Word won't work unless you have 4.0e
On some Quadras, any version of Word 4 works if you turn off the processor
cache (Cache Switch Control Panel, on the TidBITS disk). Turning off the
cache slows the Mac, so you still want 4.0e. On other Quadras, Word just
won't work unless you have 4.0e. (I can't recall offhand which Quads work
and which don't)
Don't use 4.0e on non-68040s, and keep in mind that Word 4.0 is not 32-bit
clean. 4.0a, 4.0b, 4.0c, 4.0d, and 4.0e are 32-bit clean. You can also
update free from 4.0 to 4.0d if you need 32-bit cleanliness.
The updates are not a patches, so don't look for them online. Instead, in
the U.S. call Microsoft customer service at 1-800-426-9400. Internationally
speaking, call your local sub or call International Customer Service at
206-936-8661.
Hope this helps someone,

Someone recently asked about System 7 Pro. According to the November 1993
issue of MacWorld (MacBulletin p. 31):
Apple Splits System Software - Apple's System 7 Pro
(one user $149, ten users $999), expected to debut in mid-
September, includes two system extensions previously sold
separately: AppleScript, which lets you customize your Mac
environment through scripts, and QuickTime 1.6, for playing
digital videos. System 7 Pro also comes with the new Power-
Talk extensions, which bring Apple Open Collaboration
Environment's (AOCE) built-in E-mail and groupware services
to the Mac (see "AOCE---Apple's Plan for Groupware," in this
issue). System 7 will continue to be developed and sold for
home and education users.
Other than the article mentioned above (which is on page 165), see also the
Networks blurb, "Open Season on Collaboration," on page 162.

Subject: [*] colorizing-hc-115.hqx
This is v1.1.5 of the Colorizing HC stuff, replacing the previously
distributed versions. At the heart of the stack is the colorizeHC XCMD,
which supports colour backdrops in Hypercard - supporting a surprising
variety of colour effects in standard Hypercard. However, a stack provides
other features. With some simple amendments to your stack, it will send
extra messages to indicate when colour or windows should be added. It will
maintain a list of windows over a card, and move them if the window moves
and close them when the card closes. For read-only stacks it maintains a
number of global variables, saved and restored for each stack - supporting
stacks that change the appearance of particular cards when they are on the
screen, but do not wish to save the data when Hypercard terminates. The
same mechanism can be used generally to skip some of the initialisation
process of a stack when subsequently resuming it.
This version still contains v1.0 of the XCMD, but has many extensions of
the support scripts and fixes a few bugs. The XCMD stack itself can be more
easily distributed as a run time system, without its support stacks.
The software is free, the only restriction being to preserve the copyright
notices.

This is a new version of the Bicycle Gear Calculator distributed via the
sumex and umich archives. This stack helps you design chain drives, by
seeing the gears produced by various chainwheel/freewheel combinations.
This new version copes with 8 rear cogs and has a nice new title page.
There is a new import feature to help with updating. Apart from that, it
has a few bug fixes. It now requires the Colorizing HC XCMD stack, which is
bundled in - previously this was optional. This is true even if you are
using a monochrome monitor. The stack is freeware.
